Our environmental responsibility

Our ecological responsibility

Arval is convinced that environmental protection is essential for safeguarding the future. This conviction forms the basis of Arval’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Environmentally friendly fleet solutions

Arval regards environmental protection as a key component of its business activities and provides products and services which take the impact on the environment into account. Arval actively encourages customers to consider environmental factors in their strategies and activities. As part of this, Arval focusses extensively on environmental protection initiatives. These environmentally friendly solutions include:

  • Reporting the CO2 values of each vehicle: CO2 values are shown in all offers and for the vehicle configuration. This means that when selecting the company car, the focus is not just on cost optimisation but also on keeping the CO2 value as low as possible.

  • Car Policy: Arval offers a range of services to create a car policy. Particular emphasis is placed on reducing CO2 emissions, on offering vehicle models in line with this and on providing general tips to make the leasing period more efficient. Driver training on reducing fuel consumption is provided and additional reports are provided. These reports enable drivers, for example, to reduce fuel consumption and costs of refuelling on an ongoing basis.

  • Online tools: Arval Analytics and Arval Fleet View provide customers with information about their fleets’ CO2 emissions.

  • Eco-driver training: According to the ADAC, the training enables savings of up to 20% in terms of both fuel consumption and emissions. Energy-efficient driving can only be achieved with a driving style which is anticipatory and defensive. The training teaches drivers how to do this.

  • Offsetting programme: The CO2 offsetting program is a scheme which Arval offers to customers. Arval leads by example each year with its CO2 offsetting programme. As part of this, the provider ECOACT offsets the CO2 emissions of the company car fleet in Germany. For example, in 2015, Arval was able to offset 100% of the 441 tons of CO2 from company car use. This climate contribution was used to support a sustainability project in Kenya.

  • Clear Drive: Arval Clear Drive enables our customers to reduce costs, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The interactive product supports customers in achieving cost-efficiency and environmental compatibility in operating their fleet. The three-stage programme includes valuable tips on optimum vehicle use, an online training course, an automatic e-mail service and practical tools for success monitoring.

Environmentally friendly conduct in everyday work

Arval is committed to reducing activities which impact directly on the environment. These include use of energy, paper and water, waste management, as well as supplier selection and the actions of each employee.

  • Suppliers
Arval takes environmental criteria into account in its offers and prepares a joint agreement on continual improvement of the environmental footprint with its principal suppliers. Arval also takes CO2 emission savings into account when selecting suppliers. In 2014, Arval Germany saved a total of 14.62 tonnes of CO2 by placing orders with Carglass® and was awarded the Carglass® environment certificate by the partner for doing so.

  • Employee conduct
All employees are required to act in an environmentally aware manner:
    • Reduction of paper consumption
    • Recycling and waste separation
    • Reduction of energy costs
    • Compliance with travel policy

  • Arval Bicycle Challenge 2016
Every summer, employees travel to the office by bicycle instead of by car.In 2016, a total of 19,723 km were covered, which equates to a saving of 3.6 tonnes of CO2.

  • Environmental Guideline ISO 14001
This international environmental management standard helps Arval to act in an environmentally sustainable manner. This covers energy consumption and construction materials, office furniture and IT equipment, paper and water consumption, waste management, personal carbon footprint when travelling and, of course, fleet management. In this way, Arval uses savings and innovations to make a valuable contribution to environmental protection.

Application of specific policy commitments

Arval uses risk guidelines to monitor customers’ environmental conduct. In particular, new customers who are involved commercially with tobacco, palm oil, nuclear energy, pulp processing, coal-fired power generation, oil sands, the mining industry and agriculture are monitored. Stricter investment and finance policies apply to these companies. Each employee is required to report these companies immediately and receives regular internal training in this regard.
